Future Oceans 10 kHz Porpoise Pinger
In 1999 Future Oceans commenced manufacturing a 10 kHz Pinger, designed specifically to deter Harbour Porpoise from commercial fishing gill nets.
The operating specifications for the Porpoise Pinger of 10 kHz at 132 decibels, emission interval every 4 seconds for 300 milliseconds are specified in the USA under the National Marine Fisheries Service (NMFS) “Harbour Porpoise Take Reduction Plan” and in Europe under the EC 812/2004 Pinger mandate, which applies to specific fisheries in European waters.
These mandates were implemented after numerous scientific research trials confirmed that using 10 kHz Pingers on gill nets reduced accidental Harbour Porpoise entanglement (Or “bycatch” as it is known) by over 80%.
Future Oceans Pingers Reduce Potential Porpoise Interactions
Future Oceans Harbour Porpoise Pingers are mandated in the USA under the National Marine Fisheries Service, Harbour Porpoise Take Reduction Program and in Europe under the European 812/2004 Pinger regulation.
Our Porpoise Pingers are used and trusted by hundreds of fishermen, everywhere!
How does it work?
The 10 kHz Porpoise Pinger works by emitting a signal that is known to be in the best hearing range of Porpoises. The signal acts as an alarm, and scientists believe that in some cases the Pinger stimulates Porpoises to use their echolocation which alerts them to the presence of the Pingers and fishing nets.
Who should use it?
The Porpoise Pinger will deter Porpoises from whatever the Pingers are attached to including:
- Gill nets
- Purse seine nets
- Line and trap fishing
- Aquaculture operations
In fact any gear or infrastructure in the water that may accidentally entangle Porpoises can be fitted with Porpoise Pingers.
Long Life Batteries
The Porpoise Pingers use a replaceable non rechargeable long life lithium Ion battery. The batteries in the Porpoise Pinger will last 12 months based on everyday use for 12 hours per day. Batteries are very easily replaced simply by unscrewing the two ends of the Pinger, removing the battery tray which holds the battery, replacing the battery and putting the battery holder back inside the Pinger. Visit our Future Oceans Batteries page to learn more about our batteries as well as watch a demonstration on how to change Pinger batteries
Hands Free Operation
Our Porpoise Pingers were designed for the harsh conditions experienced on commercial fishing vessels. The water contacts on the Pinger provide a hands free operation – there is nothing to do other than fit the Pingers to nets and as soon as the Pingers are immersed in the water they begin working. Once they are on board and dry, they automatically shut down and stop pinging.
Quick and Easy to Maintain
As with all fishing equipment a quick wash down with fresh water every now and then will help keep your Future Oceans Porpoise Pingers in good working order. When batteries are replaced the O ring should be inspected and replaced if there are any signs of wear and tear. A silicone based grease should be applied lightly to the O ring and Pinger threads every year.
Please refer to the Pinger Support and FAQ page for more information on the Porpoise Pinger maintenance.
